Different types of punching bags

Punching bags (formerly known as punching bags) come in different sizes and shapes and imitate the training partner during boxing training at home. Sandbags under one metre long are suitable for children, but depending on their size and training goal, punching bags can also be 180 cm long. The weight is of course determined by the length and filling of the punching bag. The punching bags from HAMMER BOXING are filled with fabric remnants. The outer skin is made of either leather, artificial leather or nylon, which is very hard-wearing. The punching bags are attached to the ceiling or a jib arm using a swivel chain.

How to find the right weight & material for you

The right combination of punching bag weight, length and material determines your training experience and the strain on your joints and muscles.

  • Weight & size: For beginners: 20-30 kg, length approx. 100-120 cm - ideal for basic exercises and technique development.
  • For advanced users: 35-50 kg, 120-150 cm - higher impact force, more realistic training.
  • For kickboxing / MMA: 150-180 cm in length, as kick combinations are also trained.

Material comparison:

  • Genuine leather: Maximum durability and realistic punch feel, ideal for intensive training.
  • Synthetic leather: Easy to care for, robust and less expensive - perfect for beginners or the home gym.
  • Nylon / canvas: Lightweight and hardwearing, suitable for children or light fitness training.

Train on a punching bag

In addition to the professional punching bags, there are also various training bags in the HAMMER online shop. They are shorter and therefore somewhat lighter, and the surface material is made of nylon or canvas. Training bags are particularly suitable for boxing training at home.

The HAMMER BOXING Boxsack Sparring , for example, is printed with numbered hitting areas, which makes boxing training extra exciting. Various punch combinations can be announced and executed. Reaction and accuracy are extremely well trained.

Exercises on the punching bag

Boxing training is an intensive full-body workout that promotes strength, endurance, coordination and mental strength. With a HAMMER punching bag, you can specifically improve your technique and fitness.

Technique exercises for beginners

  • Jab & cross (1-2 combination): Basic punch sequence to build rhythm and timing.

Extra tip

Use boxing gloves and bandages to train more safely, protect your wrists and extend the life of your punching bag.

FAQ

  • Is a punching bag useful?

A punching bag is very useful for boxing training. It enables effective strength and endurance training and improves punching technique and coordination. With a punching bag, you can train at home at any time, reduce stress and improve your fitness. It is ideal for beginners and advanced users to develop punching power, speed and precision without the need for a training partner.

  • How do you train with a punching bag?

To train effectively with a punching bag, you should first warm up thoroughly. Then practise basic punching techniques such as the jab, cross and hook, paying attention to correct execution. Combine different punches and integrate footwork for a full body workout. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of the training, starting with 15-20 minutes, and make sure you take regular breaks between training sessions.

  • Can you lose weight with boxing?

Boxing is an excellent method for losing weight. The intensive full-body workout burns up to 800 calories per hour and boosts your metabolism in the long term. Regular boxing training builds muscle mass, which increases the basal metabolic rate and promotes fat burning even during rest periods. In combination with a balanced diet, boxing can lead to effective and lasting weight loss.

  • Which muscles do you train with a punching bag?

Punching bag training is an effective full-body workout that uses many muscle groups. It primarily trains the arm, shoulder, back and chest muscles. The core muscles, especially the abdominal and back muscles, are also strongly activated. The dynamic movements and leg work also strengthen the leg and buttock muscles, which leads to a comprehensive strengthening of the muscles.

  • Is training on a punching bag healthy?

Training on a punching bag is very healthy and offers many benefits. It improves cardiovascular fitness, strengthens the muscles and promotes coordination. The intensive training burns a lot of calories, helps with weight control and reduces stress. Regular punching bag training also increases bone density and general physical strength. If done correctly, it is easy on the joints and suitable for most people.

  • How do I securely attach a punching bag to the ceiling or wall?

Use a stable ceiling bracket or wall bracket with heavy-duty dowels. Concrete ceilings or solid beams are ideal. A swivel chain prevents twisting and a spring suspension reduces vibrations and noise. Check the carabiner and chain regularly for wear.

  • What mistakes should I avoid when installing?

Never mount on plaster ceilings or thin wooden panels as they will not support the weight. Make sure that there are no objects in the swinging area - otherwise there is a risk of injury.
